Biography

Stuart Jones is a historian specializing in political thought, the history of universities, and the history of the humanities and social sciences. He received his D.Phil from Oxford in 1988 and has held various academic positions, including Research Fellow at Nuffield College and Lecturer at New College, Oxford, before joining the University of Manchester in 1990. He served as Head of History from 2000 to 2003 and became a Professor of Intellectual History in 2008. Currently, he is the Director of Research for the School of Arts, Languages and Cultures, overseeing a community of 500 researchers across the arts and humanities. His research interests include modern intellectual history, modern political thought, and the history of universities, particularly in relation to democratic theory and civil society. He is currently engaged in a major research project on James Bryce, focusing on his contributions to liberalism and democracy. Jones has supervised numerous PhD students and actively promotes research in modern political thought and intellectual history. He has received various research grants and is involved in the academic community through external examiner roles at leading universities.
