He leads a research group focused on the structure reactivity of gas-phase metal clusters and the photochemical origins of animal magnetoreception. Stuart was born and raised in County Durham and studied Chemistry and Physics at the University of Leeds from 1989 to 1992. He then pursued a DPhil at Oxford from 1992 to 1996. During his studies, he met his future wife, Professor Christiane Timmel, who was also a graduate student in the department.
