Biography

Stuart Mackenzie is a professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Oxford, where he heads the Physical Theoretical Chemistry Laboratory. His research focuses on the development of novel spectroscopic techniques applied to a variety of scientifically interesting problems. He is particularly interested in the study of dynamical interfacial phenomena through spectroscopy in condensed phases. Over the past decade, he has contributed significantly to the advancement of cavity-based optical techniques including cavity ring-down spectroscopy and cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy, which have revolutionized sensitive gas-phase trace detection. Mackenzie is currently developing a range of fast condensed phase variants of cavity ring-down and cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy utilizing evanescent fields and supercontinuum sources to investigate dynamical interfacial phenomena. His recent research has involved the study of systems such as the seeding growth of nanostructured materials and DNA-assisted desorption of porphyrins in redox reactions involving surface-immobilized cytochrome-c.
