Biography

Stuart Trenholm's lab studies neural connectivity to discover new ways to improve vision for people who have lost sight. The lab focuses on understanding specific wiring within neuronal circuits of the visual system which leads to complex visually responsive neurons and ultimately to perception. Research conducted in the lab examines visual circuits in healthy animals as well as in those that are vision-impaired or have undergone vision rehabilitation. The lab's interdisciplinary approach merges various fields, including physiology, animal behavior, virology, genetics, and disease models, with a focus on optogenetics. Techniques employed in the lab include monitoring brain activity at cellular resolution using in vivo 2-photon calcium imaging, utilizing virus-mediated neuronal circuit tracing strategies, and implementing optogenetic strategies for vision restoration.
