Biography

Stuart Walsh holds a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Melbourne. He has held postdoctoral research positions in the United States at the University of Minnesota, Cornell University, and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Returning to Australia in 2015, Walsh started a research consultancy/software development company, Stone-Code Pty. Ltd, and took a position at the University of New South Wales. In 2018, he rejoined the Melbourne academic community at Monash University's Department of Civil Engineering, as a member of the Resources Engineering division. Walsh is the lead developer of Bluecap, an open-source tool for conducting geospatial economic assessments of mineral and renewable resource potential, created in collaboration with Geoscience Australia. Bluecap software includes important analyses such as the Hydrogen Economic Fairways Tool (HEFT) and the Economic Fairways Mapper. His work has been recognized with the inaugural Eureka Prize for Innovative Research in Sustainability in 2023. Currently, his research focuses on developing precompetitive tools to identify opportunities in new renewable energy and critical mineral projects, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
