Dr. Su Yin Tan

Biography

Su-Yin Tan is an Associate Professor in the School of Planning at the University of Waterloo, where she has been teaching since 2008. Her academic background includes a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Cambridge, along with degrees in Environmental Change Management and Geography from the University of Oxford and Boston University. She specializes in geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, and spatial data analysis, with diverse applications across urban geography, public health, and environmental monitoring. Su-Yin's current research navigates through various projects, including urban crime mapping and assessing environmental changes through remote sensing technologies. A recognized scholar, she has received several awards, including the Outstanding Performance Award from the University of Waterloo and the Gates Cambridge Scholarship. Her work not only addresses academic inquiries but also contributes to practical applications in spatial data analysis and GIS education, aiming to explore threshold concepts in teaching these areas. As a key faculty member in the International Space University's Academic Council, she continues to engage in interdisciplinary research and collaboration aimed at enhancing the understanding of geographic phenomena.
