Biography

Su-Yin Tan is an Associate Professor in the Teaching Stream at the University of Waterloo, specializing in Geography and Environmental Management. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses focusing on the theory and application of remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) technologies. Since joining the university in 2008, her interdisciplinary research interests span geomatics and spatial data analysis with diverse applications in both physical and human geography. Dr. Tan is actively involved in examining biogeophysical patterns and mapping land use changes within the Toronto and Kitchener-Waterloo regions. Her projects have included crime mapping, environmental monitoring, and the application of statistical tools in GIS education. Her PhD research at the University of Cambridge explored spatial data analysis methodologies from a medical geography perspective, particularly concerning public health and crime. She currently holds the role of Chair for Space Applications within the Department of Space Studies Program at the International Space University and is involved in research on conservation science and environmental health.
