Dr. Subhrendu Pattanayak

Biography

Subhrendu K. Pattanayak is the Oak Foundation Distinguished Professor at the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University, where he also holds positions in the Department of Economics and affiliates with the Duke Center for International Development. He specializes in Environmental Energy Policy, focusing on understanding the interplay between human behavior and the natural environment. His research aims at designing and evaluating policy interventions in low-income tropical countries, with key areas including forest ecosystem services, environmental health, and household energy transitions. His approach leverages systematic reviews of literature, statistical modeling, and empirical methods such as quasi-experimental designs using primary data collected from field studies. Pattanayak has extensively collaborated with multilateral agencies, NGOs, and governments across various countries, including Brazil, Ethiopia, and India, contributing to a vibrant body of research that has influenced environmental policy and health outcomes. He holds a Ph.D. from Duke University and has authored numerous influential publications in leading academic journals.
