Dr. Subramanian Ramamoorthy

Biography

Subramanian Ramamoorthy holds a Personal Chair in Robot Learning and Autonomy at the School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh, where he also serves as the Director of the Institute of Perception, Action and Behaviour. Additionally, he is an Executive Committee Member of the Edinburgh Centre for Robotics and a Turing Fellow at the Alan Turing Institute. He received his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 2007. Ramamoorthy was elected as a member of the Young Academy of Scotland by the Royal Society of Edinburgh and has served as a Visiting Professor at Stanford University and the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. From 2017 to 2020, he acted as Vice President for Prediction and Planning at FiveAI, a UK-based startup that develops technology for autonomous vehicles, and continues to be involved with the company as a Scientific Advisor. His research focuses on robot learning and decision-making under uncertainty, with a particular emphasis on achieving safe and robust autonomy in human-centred environments. He has attracted funding from various sources, including EPSRC, European Commission (FP7, H2020), DARPA, DSTL, and RAEng, and is the Principal Investigator of the UKRI Research Node on Trustworthy Autonomous Systems Governance and Regulation.
