Dr. Sucharita Gopal

Biography

Sucharita Gopal is a Professor in the Department of Earth and Environment at Boston University (BU) and holds a visiting professor appointment at the Vienna University of Business and Economics in Austria. Her research is multidisciplinary, primarily focusing on intricate geospatial data analysis and modeling, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), data mining, information visualization, and artificial neural networks. She has pioneered numerous methodologies over the years, including fuzzy sets for accuracy assessment and neural networks for pattern classification and estimation. Gopal's work often intersects data science with statistical analysis to address practical applications in urban planning, system modeling, public health, and sustainable finance, aiming to provide holistic solutions to society's challenging problems. Recent projects encompass ecosystem-based management for offshore wind energy production in the Gulf of Maine, gendered food security in Lake Victoria, and coastal ecosystem modeling. She has also engaged in developing decision support tools utilizing deep learning for mangrove mapping and analyzed opioid addiction through panel modeling. Gopal is an advocate for STEM education and public outreach efforts as part of her scholarly pursuits.
