Biography

Professor Sueann Caulfield is the Associate Director of the Donia Human Rights Center and holds a position in the Department of History at the University of Michigan. She completed her Ph.D. at New York University in 1994. Her research focuses on modern Brazilian history, with an emphasis on gender and sexuality. Caulfield's notable works include her book 'In Defense of Honor: Morality, Modernity, Nation in Early Twentieth-Century Brazil' published by Duke University Press, where she explores the significance of honor within Brazilian law and popular culture. Currently, she is researching the social history of concepts of legitimacy in twentieth-century Brazil. Her recent courses include Social and Cultural Theories of the Twentieth Century and Family Ties: Honor, Sexuality, and Law in Latin American History.
