Sugata Bose is the Gardiner Professor of Oceanic History and Affairs at Harvard University. He served as the Director of Graduate Studies in History and was the Founding Director of Harvard’s South Asia Institute. Before taking the Gardiner Chair in 2001, he was a Fellow at St. Catharine’s College, University of Cambridge, and a Professor of History and Diplomacy at Tufts University. Bose received his education from Presidency College, Calcutta, and the University of Cambridge, where he obtained his Ph.D. His notable publications include 'Modern South Asia: History, Culture, Political Economy' (with Ayesha Jalal), 'Hundred Horizons: Indian Ocean Age Global Empire', 'Majesty’s Opponent: Subhas Chandra Bose India’s Struggle Empire', and 'Asia Europe: Imagining Continent Long Twentieth Century'. He was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1997 and gave the G.M. Trevelyan Lecture at the University of Cambridge. In 2015, he was honored with the Rabindra Puraskar. Additionally, he has produced significant documentary films on modern South Asian history and published several albums of Bengali music and poetry. Bose also served as a Member of Parliament in India from 2014 to 2019, representing the Jadavpur constituency, and has been recognized for his eloquent defense of democracy in the Parliament.
