Biography

Suhail Matar is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics at the University of Cambridge. His research interests lie primarily in the neurocognitive mechanisms that underlie language production and comprehension. Suhail investigates how the human brain processes syntactic structures, morphological segmentation in speech, and discourse-level referential structures. Employing a variety of methodologies, including electrophysiology (MEG/EEG), neuroimaging (fMRI), and behavioral experiments, he aims to unravel the cognitive operations involved in language comprehension. Furthermore, Suhail adopts a cross-linguistic approach to experimental neuro-psycholinguistics, leveraging the unique grammatical features of understudied languages, particularly Arabic, to enhance our understanding of language processing. He obtained his PhD from New York University’s Psychology Department and has served as a post-doctoral fellow at the Basque Center for Cognition, Brain and Language. Suhail encourages inquiries from prospective MPhil and PhD students whose research interests align with his own.
