Biography

Sukanya Banerjee works on literature and culture in Victorian Britain and the empire. Broadly, she is interested in postcolonial studies, ecology, transnationalism, diaspora, and political theory, particularly in the context of South Asia. Her book, "Becoming Imperial Citizens: Indians in the Late-Victorian Empire" (Duke University Press, 2010), won the NVSA Sonya Rudikoff Prize for the best book in Victorian studies, focusing on liberal discourse of citizenship and the claims of colonized subjects in late nineteenth- to early twentieth-century Britain. She also co-edited "New Routes: Diaspora Studies" (Indiana University Press, 2012) and is currently working on a project tentatively titled "Loyalty Making Modern: Transimperial System," which explores the concept of loyalty and its intertwining with modernity. Her academic contributions include various articles and essays in notable journals related to Victorian literature and culture. Sukanya joined the English department at the University of California, Berkeley in 2020, after teaching for decades at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she was honored with the UW-Milwaukee Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award in 2016.
