Biography

Sulaimon Abiodun Olawale Giwa is an educator and researcher based in Canada, specializing in forensic social work and LGBTQ+ studies. He earned his PhD in Social Work from York University in 2017 after completing his Master's in Social Work focused on Social Policy Administration at Carleton University in 2006, and a Bachelor's degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice in 2004. As an Associate Professor and Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Giwa also holds an endowed chair in Criminology at St. Thomas University. His work involves substantial research on critical race theory, anti-Black racism, LGBTQ+ migration, and intersectionality, aiming to improve community-police relations and social justice frameworks. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and is active in various committees that focus on equity and social justice. Giwa advocates for marginalized communities, addressing systemic racism and enhancing civic participation through educational workshops and consultation.
