Sumanta Basu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Statistics and Data Science at Cornell Bowers University. His research focuses on developing statistical machine learning methods for structure learning and prediction in complex, high-dimensional systems that arise in the biological and social sciences. Currently, he is involved in network modeling of high-dimensional time series and in detecting high-order interactions in complex biological systems using randomized tree ensembles. He collaborates closely with scientists and economists on a wide range of challenges including prostate cancer progression, large-scale metabolomics, and systemic risk monitoring in financial markets. Prior to joining Cornell, he was a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Statistics at UC Berkeley and worked in the Biosciences Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory from 2014 to 2016. He received his Ph.D. in statistics from the University of Michigan in 2014, and holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in statistics from the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, acquired in 2006 and 2008, respectively. Before pursuing his Ph.D., he worked for a year as a business analyst at Wipro Technologies.
