Dr. Sumit Chopra

Biography

Sumit Chopra is an Associate Professor at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University, and serves as the Director of Machine Learning Research in the Department of Radiology at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine. His research focuses on advancing artificial intelligence with an emphasis on deep learning models and their transformative applications in healthcare. Before joining NYU, he co-founded Imagen Technologies, a well-funded startup revolutionizing healthcare with AI, and served as Vice President for AI. Sumit was previously a research scientist at Facebook AI Research, where he contributed to advancements in natural language understanding. He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from New York University, where his dissertation introduced a pioneering neural network model for relational regression. His prior experience includes a senior scientist position at AT&T Labs—Research, where he developed innovative deep learning models for speech recognition, natural language processing, and computer vision. Sumit's work extended into recommender systems, computational advertising, and ranking algorithms. He is known for his early pioneering contributions to self-supervised learning and has been integral to the development of representation learning techniques that have shaped modern AI approaches.
