Sun-Yung Bak joined the University of Michigan School of Dentistry as a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Biologic and Materials Sciences & Prosthodontics on January 1, 2019. She obtained her undergraduate degree in Biological Chemistry from Wellesley College and earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from the University of Michigan in 1998. Following this, she completed a general practice residency at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, in 1999. After practicing for ten years, Dr. Bak received a certificate in Prosthodontics from the DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, Texas, in 2012, and completed a fellowship in Maxillofacial Prosthetics at UCLA School of Dentistry in 2013. Before joining the University of Michigan, she was a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina dental school for five years, where she served as the course director for the Complete Dentures course and was the Clinical Director of Removable Prosthodontics as well as the Director of the Maxillofacial Prosthetics graduate program. Her research interests include dosimetric distribution in radiotherapy for lesions in head and neck cancer patients, and digital dentistry in maxillofacial prosthetics. She is board eligible with the American Board of Prosthodontics and is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Dental Association, the American College of Prosthodontics, the American Academy of Maxillofacial Prosthetics, and the American Dental Education Association.
