Sun Nyunt Wai is a Professor in Medical Microbial Pathogenesis at Umeå University. His research focuses on the properties of pathogenic bacteria at the molecular level. He aims to unravel the mechanisms of interaction between microbes and host cells to understand the causes of infectious diseases and to explore new opportunities for prevention and cure. His group has shown that small membrane vesicles released by bacteria can affect host cells, comprising specific proteins and macromolecules that influence the host's immune system and cellular signaling mechanisms crucial for tumor formation in cancer. Sun is a member of the Umeå Centre for Microbial Research (UCMR) and represents the Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS), participating in international recruitment initiatives within the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine. He collaborates with young group leaders in the field to advance research and contribute to significant scientific publications. Current research projects under his guidance focus on the molecular mechanisms of bacteria-host interactions and innovative structural mechanisms in membrane remodeling.
