Biography

Sunghwan (Sunny) Jung is a Professor and Director of Graduate Studies at Cornell University in the Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering. He received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Texas at Austin in 2005, after earning an M.S. in Physics from Pohang University of Science and Technology in 2001 and a B.A. in Chemical Engineering from Sogang University in 1999. Prior to joining Cornell, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Courant Institute at NYU and a math instructor at MIT. Professor Jung's research primarily focuses on the mechanics of deformable interfaces and their interactions with surrounding fluids. His work integrates mathematical modeling with fluid dynamics and both physical and biological experiments. He investigates a variety of phenomena including animal behaviors, plant physiology, and fluid dynamics, contributing to a greater understanding of how biological systems harness fluidic environments. Jung has supervised students from diverse academic backgrounds in multidisciplinary research, promoting skills that cross traditional disciplinary boundaries.
