Biography

Dr. Sunghyun Yoon is a nationally and internationally recognized expert in the treatment of sarcomas and soft tissue tumors, gastric and gastroesophageal cancers, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, and melanoma. He has over 18 years of experience treating various abdominal tumors, including hepatobiliary and neuroendocrine tumors. Dr. Yoon serves as the Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology and Vice-Chair for Surgical Oncology Research Education at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. He is the principal investigator in clinical trials that explore innovative treatment strategies and has delivered numerous invited lectures at national and international levels. As an early advocate of minimally invasive robotic surgery, Dr. Yoon has performed over 300 procedures, including the world's largest number of prophylactic total gastrectomies for patients with hereditary diffuse gastric cancer. His research focuses on cancer stem cells, targeted biological agents, and the combination of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Funded by the National Institutes of Health, his laboratory works towards translating research discoveries into clinical applications. Dr. Yoon is part of multi-institutional research groups aimed at improving diagnostics and therapies for gastric cancer, with over 150 original research articles and book chapters to his name.
