Biography

Sungmin Nam is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan. He earned his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 2019, where he also obtained his Master’s degree in 2015. Sungmin completed his undergraduate studies at Seoul National University in 2013. His research focuses on mechanobiology, biomaterials, biomechanics, medical devices, and mechanotherapy. He has received several awards, including the New Investigator Recognition Award from the Orthopedic Research Society in 2023 and was named one of the Innovators 35 by MIT Technology Review in 2022. Sungmin also received recognition as a Rising Star at the Soft Biological Matter Symposium organized by NSF MRSEC in 2022. His research contributions have been acknowledged through the Baxter Young Investigator Award from Baxter Healthcare in 2022, and he was honored with a Poster Presentation Award at the US-KOREA Conference on Science, Technology, and Entrepreneurship in 2022. Currently, he is a Wyss Technology Development Fellow at the Wyss Institute at Harvard University from 2019 to 2024, supported by the Samsung Scholarship Foundation during his doctoral research.
