Biography

Dr. Sunil Kapila serves as the Professor and Dr. Thomas R. Bales Endowed Chair in the Section of Orthodontics at the UCLA School of Dentistry. He has an extensive academic background, having earned his B.D.S. from the University of Nairobi, his M.S. in Orthodontics from the University of Oklahoma, and his Ph.D. in Oral Biology from the University of California San Francisco. His previous roles include the Eugene E. West Endowed Chair at the UCSF Dental Center and notable professorships at the University of Michigan. His scholarly contributions include numerous manuscripts and chapters, as well as two significant textbooks in orthodontics. Dr. Kapila has demonstrated leadership through his tenure as Past President of the Craniofacial Biology Group and as Inaugural Chair of the AAO's Inclusion Engagement Task Force. He is actively involved in both local and international academic communities, having delivered approximately 150 invited lectures. His research interests are diverse and include Pathobiology, TMJ Degenerative Disorders, Drug Delivery Systems, and 3D Imaging. His commitment to orthodontics and dental education is further demonstrated through his active participation in various academic committees, editorial boards, and his co-direction of research programs in Kenya.
