Dr. Sunil Tankha

Biography

Sunil Tankha is an Assistant Professor at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam. His research primarily focuses on development policies and governance, with particular attention to issues related to infrastructure, such as electric power and water management. He combines research with policy advice, generating data and ideas that assist policymakers in tackling complex, nuanced problems. Sunil has extensive experience across four continents and has worked significantly in countries like Brazil, Georgia, India, the Netherlands, and the United States. His work in Brazil included in-depth studies of policy reforms in electric power and water management, contributing to reports for the World Bank on involuntary resettlement policies and urban redevelopment practices. In India, he has authored various articles and case studies on participatory water management and sanitation reform. His research also delves into the institutional arrangements for climate change adaptation, particularly in the Himalayan-Hindukush mountain ranges. In the United States, he prepared reports on government procurement policies and their effects on industrial development and water management in the Texas-Mexico cross-border region. He is multilingual, speaking English, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Hindi, and Bengali fluently, with knowledge of Dutch, Russian, and Urdu.
