Dr. Sunil Vasu

Biography

Sunil Kalmady Vasu is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Computing Science and a Senior Machine Learning Specialist at the University of Alberta. He has a robust background in medical artificial intelligence, particularly within the domains of cardiovascular health and computational psychiatry. Dr. Vasu holds dual Master’s degrees in Medical Biotechnology with a specialization in Human Genetics and Computer Science, as well as a Ph.D. in Neuropsychiatry focusing on brain imaging and mental disorders. His postdoctoral work was completed at the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii), which is recognized as a leading center for excellence in AI research in Canada. He has dedicated over a decade to mentoring graduate students and overseeing international research interns in computing and biomedical fields. His research prominently features the development and application of machine learning models, validated with extensive healthcare datasets to predict diagnostic and prognostic outcomes in cardiovascular disease. His publications have appeared in renowned journals such as Nature Digital Medicine and Nature Schizophrenia, contributing significantly to advancements in AI-driven medical applications. Dr. Vasu is passionate about creating intelligent systems that enhance patient outcomes through personalized treatment approaches and is equally committed to mentoring future researchers in AI and medicine.
