Dr. Sunny Chung

Biography

Sunny Chung is a gastroenterologist and clinical informatics researcher at Yale School of Medicine, whose work focuses on improving complex, high-impact decision-making in the field of gastroenterology. After completing his medical training at Yale, he undertook an internal medicine residency at Duke University Hospital and a fellowship in gastroenterology at Yale. Dr. Chung earned a Master of Health Science in Clinical Informatics and is dedicated to integrating generative artificial intelligence and machine learning to modernize how clinicians utilize real-world data for clinical evidence in uncertain high-stakes scenarios. His research includes developing pipelines for feature extraction based on large language models, dynamic risk models, and simulation-based evaluations of human-AI interactions. Moreover, he works on tools aimed at enhancing the operationalization of guidelines and synthesizing evidence across various gastrointestinal conditions. Dr. Chung has received national recognition as an Innovation Fellow from the American Gastroenterological Association and as an AI Scholar from the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. His scholarly work has been published in leading journals such as Gastroenterology and npj Digital Medicine, and he serves as an Editorial Fellow for Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology. His broader goal is to advance the safe, equitable, and clinically meaningful integration of AI in medicine, bridging clinical expertise, data science, and health policy in gastroenterology to support evidence-based practice.
