Professor Dr. Suren Bagratuni

Biography

Suren Bagratuni is a distinguished cellist and Professor of Cello at Michigan State University College of Music, where he also serves as the Chair of the String Area. Born in Yerevan, Armenia, he began his musical education at the age of seven and won the silver medal at the 1986 International Tchaikovsky Competition. After completing his studies at the Moscow Conservatory and the New England Conservatory of Music, he embarked on an international career as a soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician. He has performed with major orchestras across the Soviet Union and worldwide, including the Moscow Philharmonic and numerous orchestras in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Bagratuni's chamber music appearances are renowned, having participated in prestigious festivals such as the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Newport Music Festival. His recorded works have received critical acclaim and broadcast on major media outlets like CBC Radio Canada and NPR. In addition to his solo performances, he is a member of the Trio Nobilis and the artistic director of a cello music festival.
