Suresh Banjara is a postdoctoral scientist in Linda Sandblad's laboratory at Umeå University, specializing in Cryo-Electron Microscopy (Cryo-EM) techniques to explore the architecture of the extracellular matrix surrounding mammalian egg cells. He completed his master's in Biotechnology Bioinformatics at La Trobe University, Australia, and earned his PhD in Biochemistry from the same institution. During his doctoral studies, he utilized X-ray crystallography to examine the structures of B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2) proteins found in large viruses such as the African Swine Fever Virus and Grouper Iridovirus, which use Bcl-2 proteins to subvert the host defense system. By the end of his PhD, he became intrigued by Cryo-EM techniques and initiated his postdoctoral research in September 2021. His current research focuses on understanding the protein coat of the oocyte, particularly the role of key components of the extracellular matrix, like the Zona Pellucida, in preventing polyspermy. He has collaborated with Luca Jovine's Laboratory at the Karolinska Institute for his research projects.
