Biography

Susan Ackerman is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the University of California, San Diego. She is an HHMI Investigator and holds the Stephen W. Kuffler Chair in Biology. Dr. Ackerman's research focuses on defining the molecular pathways necessary for maintaining homeostasis in developing and aging mammalian neurons. Her laboratory utilizes forward genetics to identify mutations associated with neuron loss in the aging mouse brain. Furthermore, she dissects pathways underlying homeostatic disruptions that lead to disease and identifies genetic variants that either enhance or suppress neural phenotypes. This work has led to the discovery of novel pathways associated with neuronal function and survival. Dr. Ackerman is particularly interested in the role of alterations in translation elongation, translational fidelity, proteostasis, and RNA metabolism in neuronal function.
