Biography

Dr. Susan Avery joined the Discipline of Family Medicine as an Assistant Professor in September 2012 and attained the title of Associate Professor in 2022. She is a Fellow of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has contributed significantly to low-risk family medicine-obstetrical (FM-OBS) training and the Family Centered Maternity Care (FCMC) initiative. Dr. Avery is the Curriculum Chair for Memorial's Family Medicine Residency Training Program, collaborating closely with colleagues to ensure a comprehensive curriculum for residents. She grew up in Stephenville, Newfoundland and Labrador, and completed her medical education and family medicine residency training at Memorial University between 2009 and 2011. She also earned a Master’s degree in Education – Post-Secondary Studies from Memorial in 2024. Currently, she serves as the clinical lead at Shea Heights Community Medical Clinic, where she practices full scope family medicine with a focus on FM-OBS, chronic pain management, and opioid agonist therapy.
