Biography

Susan V. R. Billington is an Associate Professor at the University of Calgary's Faculty of Law, where she teaches Student Legal Assistance and core courses in the JD program. She has spearheaded initiatives related to experiential learning and has served as the Executive Director of Student Legal Assistance from 2018 to 2024. Under her leadership, the program adapted to a digital approach during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a strong advocate for access to justice, she has been recognized with the Ferguson Award for her contributions to clinical legal education. Originally graduating from the Faculty of Law at the University of Calgary in 1985, Susan was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1986. With a dedicated career in law, she has held various positions within the Law Society of Alberta, focusing on policy development, pro bono initiatives, and legal education. Susan continues to foster excellence in legal practice through mentoring roles and has also served as a Municipal Councillor. Her awards include the Woman Law Leadership Award and the Distinguished Service Award from the Law Society of Alberta.
