Biography

Susan Branje is a Professor and the Head of the Department of Youth and Family at Utrecht University. She focuses on the development and socialization during adolescence and is affiliated with the educational program in Pedagogical Sciences within the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. Her research centers on family pedagogy and ecological pedagogy, particularly examining the everyday upbringing and the interactions between caregivers, young people, and their social environment. Branje's work investigates the influence of parents, siblings, friends, and other factors on adolescents' psychosocial adjustment, personality development, and identity formation from early adolescence through young adulthood. She explores the successful transitions to adulthood and the intergenerational factors that contribute to these processes. She is also involved in the hub 'Where do you belong? Growing multi-resident families', aiming to improve children's positions in discussions surrounding divorce and family dynamics. Branje studied Developmental Psychology at Radboud University and obtained her PhD in 2003. Currently, she is engaged in several research projects including RADAR and InTransition. She has been actively teaching educational programs related to Pedagogical Sciences, Clinical Child and Family Sciences, and Youth, Education and Society.
