Biography

Sue teaches land law, contract law, regulation, and housing human rights. She has been teaching at the University of Oxford since 1992 and has previously worked as a solicitor in London and taught at the University of Essex. Sue is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and holds a Fellowship with the South African Research Chair in Property Law. She is also an academic member of the Chancery Bar Association, the Property Bar Association, and the Property Litigation Association. Sue's recent ongoing research focuses on the complexities stemming from multi-owned property, addressing issues such as fire safety problems that have emerged following tragic events like the Grenfell Tower disaster. She explores the legal tools available to impose positive obligations on homeowners in shared spaces, investigating the 'Fleecehold Leasehold Scandal.' Additionally, she examines the environmental performance of the built environment, leading a multidisciplinary project on energy upgrades for residential leasehold properties. Her expertise also extends to commercial sectors, particularly on 'green leases.' From 2014 to 2016, she was a member of an interdisciplinary team on an EPSRC-funded project called 'Wicked,' which studied Energy Management in the Retail Sector. Collaborating with psychologist Professor Mandeep Dhami, she has explored decision-making in housing possession cases, incorporating insights from psychology and behavioral sciences. The eclectic nature of Sue's work has prompted her to co-edit the book 'Researching Property Law' (Palgrave, 2015) with Professor Sarah Blandy, which delves into various scholarly approaches.
