Biography

Susan Cross is a Reader in Jewellery and Silversmithing at the Edinburgh College of Art. With a foundation diploma from Herefordshire College of Art & Design and a four-year Jewellery degree from Middlesex Polytechnic, London, she graduated in 1986. Susan has worked extensively in Edinburgh since relocating from London in 1989. She has been a part-time lecturer in the Jewellery & Silversmithing department since then, exhibiting her work both nationally and internationally. Susan is a multi-award-winning artist, recognized with the Jerwood Applied Arts Award in 2007. She has shared her expertise globally through teaching and has held various external examiner roles, including at London Metropolitan University from 2008 to 2012. Susan’s research encompasses the materiality and processes of jewellery making, focusing on themes of containment, boundaries, and the transient nature of time and growth. Drawing is fundamental to her design process, which is inspired by textile techniques and natural forms. Her recent work integrates precious metals with semi-precious stones to create evocative pieces that highlight the transience of life.
