Biography

Susan Gourvenec specializes in offshore geotechnical engineering with particular interests in foundation and pipeline solutions for offshore oil and gas developments. She joined the Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems (COFS) at the University of Western Australia in 2001 and holds a PhD from the University of Southampton, UK, along with an undergraduate Honours degree from the University of London, UK. Susan is the author of more than 70 international scientific papers, serves as chair and co-editor for proceedings at international conferences, and is co-author of a recent book titled "Offshore Geotechnical Engineering." She leads the delivery of specialized courses on offshore geomechanics as part of the University curriculum and offers short courses for industry. Susan supervises projects for Honours and PhD students as well as research staff, and is the leader of the Numerical Modelling Technology Stream at COFS. Her work interfaces with industry research-based collaborations and she is part-time Principal Engineer at Advanced Geomechanics, a specialist geotechnical consultancy based in Perth. Susan plays a key role in offshore shallow foundations, anchoring systems, and submarine pipelines, and is currently involved in projects addressing mobile subsea foundations, field testing, and the effects of salinity and anisotropy on soil response.
