Biography

Susan Harrow is the Ashley Watkins Chair of French Language and Literature at the University of Bristol, where she has been a professor since 2007. She completed her undergraduate and doctoral studies at the University of Edinburgh. Harrow specializes in the literature of the later nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with particular interests in poetry and the interrelation of literary modernism with visual culture. She has authored multiple monographs, including 'Material, Real Fractured Self: Subjectivity and Representation in Rimbaud and Réda' (2004) and 'Colourworks: Chromatic Innovation in Modern French Poetry' (2020), for which she received the R. Gapper Book Prize in 2021. Her ongoing research includes a major project on epistolary literature involving figures such as Cézanne and Zola, supported by a Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship. Beyond her research, Harrow is recognized for her service in various academic roles, including as an elected president of the Society for French Studies and current president of the Zola Society in Great Britain. She actively supervises PhD students and contributes to the curriculum in French literature and visual culture. Her leadership roles extend to significant contributions in external advisory capacities including the REF 2021 Sub-Panel in Modern Languages and Linguistics.
