Biography

Susan B. Martin is a Senior Lecturer in the War Studies Department at King's College London. Her research primarily focuses on International Relations theory, specifically structural realism, to analyze state policies regarding the use of chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons, and the dynamics of deterrence and coercive diplomacy. She is currently completing a book manuscript titled 'Taboos and Consequences: The Role of Normative and Instrumental Factors in Decision-Making about the Use and Non-use of Chemical, Biological, and Nuclear Weapons during the Vietnam War.' Her ongoing projects explore the use of chemical weapons in Syria and gender issues related to WMD. Martin has earned her BA in Political Science from Yale University and her MA and PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, where her doctoral dissertation examined balancing dynamics in the economic realm. She has also been a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Christopher H. Browne Center for International Politics at the University of Pennsylvania and has taught at Wesleyan University, University of Pennsylvania, and Florida Atlantic University.
