Biography

Susan Mowatt is an artist and lecturer with a particular interest in weaving. She graduated in 1989 with a degree in Drawing and Painting from the Edinburgh College of Art, gained a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from Moray House College of Education, and completed an MFA in Tapestry from the Edinburgh College of Art in 1992. Susan has worked with the Frankische Gobelin Manufactur in Bavaria and the Victorian Tapestry Workshop in Melbourne, Australia. She is the director of West Barns Arts, an organization that provides studio provision, exhibitions, and educational activities in East Lothian, and runs Cadmium Lovebug, a venture that campaigns for creativity and enables access to art education for children in the community. In her role, she fosters student participation through annual projects in primary schools, embedding art within the curriculum. Susan has held the position of Head of the Art Programme and Director of Intermedia from 2014 to 2021, teaching undergraduate courses including Presentation: Methods & Contexts 3 and specialist courses in textiles and contemporary art practice. Her research interests focus on the act of weaving as a process and artifact, with outputs that include live performances of weaving, explorations in moving images, and presentations at conferences. She has been recognized with various awards, including the international Cordis Tapestry Prize in 2016.
