Biography

Susan Kay Murphy is an Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Duke University, where she also serves as the Chief of the Division of Reproductive Sciences. Dr. Murphy has a background in molecular biology, specializing in human epigenetics. Her research interests focus on the role of epigenetic modifications in health and disease. She is currently engaged in projects related to gynecologic malignancies, particularly exploring methods to eradicate ovarian cancer cells that survive chemotherapy and lead to recurrent disease. Additionally, Dr. Murphy is involved in collaborative research projects concerning the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD). Her lab is researching the impacts of preconception environmental exposures on males, specifically regarding cannabis and its effects on sperm epigenome and potential heritability. The Newborn Epigenetics Study (NEST), a pregnancy cohort she co-founded in central North Carolina in 2005, continues to follow participants to establish the connections between prenatal exposures and health outcomes in children.
