Dr. Susan Preston

Biography

Susan Preston is an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at Toronto Metropolitan University. She has extensive experience in social work practice, focusing on child protection and criminal justice systems for homeless youth. Her research critically examines the influence of neoliberalism on social work practices, policies, and education, specifically analyzing how governmental and institutional policies affect social workers and service users. Her scholarly work involves engaging with social workers in northern Canada, particularly within the Yukon, where she aims to inform authentic engagement methods in social work practice. Dr. Preston's empirical research often employs case study, institutional ethnography, and discourse analysis to investigate the underlying assumptions and practices related to power and social relations. Her research interests include social policy, institutional practices, social work education, and critical social work methodologies, particularly in rural and northern contexts.
