Dr. Susanna Thon

Biography

Susanna M. Thon is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. She serves as the associate director of the Ralph O’Connor Sustainable Energy Institute (ROSEI). Her expertise lies in nanomaterials engineering and optoelectronic devices, particularly focusing on solar energy conversion and sensing. Thon's research applies nanophotonics and scalable fabrication techniques to create innovative devices with novel optical and electrical functionalities. Her team is currently engaged in projects that explore the development of plasmonic-photocatalytic systems utilizing nanoparticles that enhance light absorption. They investigate how nanostructured materials, such as colloidal quantum dots and plasmonic metal nanoparticles, can be used to build advanced multicolored and transparent devices. Thon's contributions to the field include more than 50 research papers published in peer-reviewed journals, and she has received funding from prestigious organizations including the American Chemical Society and the National Science Foundation. She holds a Bachelor's degree from MIT and a Master's and PhD from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Prior to joining Johns Hopkins in 2013, she worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Toronto.
