Biography

Susanna M. Thon is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. She is also the Marshal Salant Faculty Scholar and is the associate director of the Ralph O’Connor Sustainable Energy Institute (ROSEI). Her research focuses on renewable energy conversion and storage, particularly in the fields of nanomaterials engineering and optoelectronic devices with an emphasis on solar energy conversion and sensing. Thon's work employs nanophotonics and scalable fabrication techniques to develop devices with novel optical and electrical functionalities. Currently, her team is developing plasmonic-photocatalytic systems utilizing nanoparticles to enhance light absorption in titanium dioxide. They are also researching ways to use nanostructured materials and colloidal quantum dots to build next-generation optical devices. Thon has published over 50 peer-reviewed research papers and has received funding from various organizations, including the American Chemical Society and the National Science Foundation. She is a past chair of the Optical Society of America’s Optics and Energy Technical Group and is a member of several professional societies, including the American Physical Society and the Materials Research Society.
