Dr. Susannah Ferreira is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Guelph with a focus on late medieval Spain and Portugal and European overseas expansion from 1300 to 1600. Her research examines political centralization in Portugal during its early overseas expansion, evaluating the motives that led to the creation of the Portuguese overseas empire. Ferreira’s current research concerns the cultural assimilation of New Christians in Portugal, who were forcibly converted under the Portuguese crown, particularly during the so-called expulsion of Jews and Muslims in 1496-97. She completed her Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins University in 2003 and has been with the University of Guelph since 2004, previously serving as a lecturer at Kings College, University of Aberdeen. Her publications include works on political centralization in Portugal, the role of nobility in early modern Europe, and financial reforms at the royal court in the sixteenth century. Ferreira’s contributions have helped advance the understanding of social and political change in the context of European expansion during this transformative period.
