Dr. Susanne Ersöz

Biography

Susanne Berndt Ersöz is a senior lecturer specializing in Classical Archaeology and Ancient History at Lund University. Her research primarily focuses on the Eastern Mediterranean, particularly Asia Minor during the Iron Age, with a keen interest in the intersections of religion, history, and art. Her doctoral thesis analyzed archaeological remains of Phrygian rock-cut sanctuaries, which earned her the Prize for Outstanding Scholarly Work from the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History, and Antiquities in 2005. Dr. Ersöz has led several research projects exploring religion's role in society during this era, including topics such as religious themes in wall paintings and political uses of religious practices. Her academic journey continues to evolve as she expands her geographical and chronological focus to include the central Mediterranean and the entirety of the Roman period. Additionally, she is involved in various academic activities, from organizing public lectures to participating in editorial boards for journals.
