Dr. Susanne Janssen

Biography

Susanne Janssen is a full professor of Sociology and Media Culture at Erasmus University Rotterdam, where she also serves as research director in the Department of Media and Communication. She has a distinguished academic career, having been appointed a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2021 and joining the Dutch Research Council board in 2024. Her research and teaching encompass cultural sociology and media communication, delving into themes that address the impact of globalization and commercialization in the cultural field. With a focus on diversity and digitalization, she examines socio-cultural differences in media use and cultural participation, and their relationship to well-being. Janssen has directed significant research projects, including the Horizon 2020 project on societal values and cultural policies, and co-directed initiatives to enhance diversity practices in various sectors. Her contributions to academia have been recognized through numerous prestigious grants. Internationally recognized for her work in media and cultural studies, she has held various leadership roles, including as a founding co-director of multiple academic programs at her university and participating in editorial roles for leading academic journals. Her educational background includes an MA in General Language Literature Studies and a Ph.D. from the University of Tilburg, with research focusing on reputation formation in literature.
