Dr. Sushrut Waikar

Biography

Sushrut Waikar, MD, MPH, serves as the Norman G. Levinsky Professor of Medicine at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and the Chief of Nephrology at Boston Medical Center. His educational background includes a BA from Amherst College, an MD from Yale University, and an MPH from Harvard University. Dr. Waikar's research primarily focuses on nephrology, including epidemiologic, translational, and interventional studies that address significant clinical questions. Key areas of interest involve improving diagnostic testing for acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease, identifying biomarkers for kidney pathology and fibrosis, and conducting randomized controlled trials to establish effective interventions in kidney diseases. He has been the Principal Investigator for various NIH grants, focusing on kidney precision medicine and the impacts of social determinants on health within marginalized populations. Dr. Waikar is also committed to enhancing diversity within the nephrology workforce and has contributed significantly to discussions on racial biases in kidney function estimation, aiming to promote equitable healthcare practices in nephrology.
