Biography

Susie Protschky is a Full Professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, specializing in Global Political History. Her research expertise includes modern Dutch colonialism, Indonesian history, and the history of photography. She has a particular focus on visual cultures of war and violence, environmental natural disasters, gender, race, and citizenship. Before joining VU Amsterdam, she worked at Deakin University from 2021 to 2023, Monash University from 2010 to 2021, and the University of Western Australia in Perth from 2008 to 2010. Susie earned her doctorate from the University of New South Wales in Sydney in 2007. Her research has received significant funding through major grants and fellowships from institutions such as the Australian Research Council and the Royal Netherlands Institute for Southeast Asian Caribbean Studies. Currently, she is writing a book on the history of colonial war photography during the Aceh War and the Indonesian National Revolution, which is contracted with Cornell University Press. Her previous publications include notable works on the visual culture of colonial Indonesia, which have received accolades including awards from the Asian Studies Association of Australia and the Royal Studies Journal.
