Biography

Susu Xu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Systems Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. Her research is focused on mobile sensing, machine learning, urban computing, and smart infrastructure systems, specifically targeting rapid disaster response. Current projects involve developing learning algorithms and incentive mechanisms to improve the efficiency of urban crowdsensing networks and collaborations. Xu's work also includes creating physics-informed machine learning algorithms that enable fairness-aware urban infrastructure systems, as well as enhancing rapid disaster response systems through multi-sourced, multi-modal sensing and learning techniques. The applications of her research address real-time disaster information acquisition related to natural hazards such as earthquakes, hurricanes, and wildfires, while also examining spatio-temporal urban sensing data for insights on air pollution and traffic. Throughout her career, Xu has received multiple accolades including the NSF CAREER Award and several best paper awards at major conferences. Before joining Johns Hopkins in 2024, she held a postdoctoral research position at Stanford University and was an Assistant Professor at Stony Brook University, in addition to being a machine learning researcher at Qualcomm AI Research.
