Dr. Suvir Kaul

Biography

Suvir Kaul is the M. Rosenthal Professor Emeritus of English at the University of Pennsylvania. He earned his bachelor's degree with honors from the University of Delhi, followed by an M. Phil. and Ph.D. from Cornell University. Kaul began his career at SGTB Khalsa College in Delhi and has taught at prestigious institutions such as the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Stanford University, and Jamia Millia Islamia as a visiting professor. He has post-doctoral fellowships from the University of Canterbury and the Society for the Humanities at Cornell University. His teaching encompasses Eighteenth-Century British Literature, Contemporary South Asian Writing in English, and Literary Critical Theory. Kaul has authored four books, including 'Gardens Graves: Essays on Kashmir,' and has edited significant publications such as 'Partitions of Memory: The Afterlife of the Division of India.' He served as the Director of the South Asia Center from 2005 to 2007 and as Chair of the English Department from 2007 to 2010 at Penn. His contribution to the principles of academic freedom has been influential, and he has chaired various doctoral dissertations, fostering a new generation of scholars in the field.
