Biography

Suzanne Kearns is an Associate Professor and the Founding Director of the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Aeronautics (WISA) at the University of Waterloo. Her academic focus lies in aviation education, particularly in improving pilot performance. Dr. Kearns's research explores strategies to optimize the next generation of aviation professionals (NGAP) by analyzing processes that attract individuals to the field of aviation. As an accomplished educator, she has taught thousands of aviation professionals worldwide using electronic courseware. Dr. Kearns is also an internationally recognized airplane and helicopter pilot. She has authored and co-authored six books, including the textbook "Fundamentals of International Aviation," which is used globally and has multiple translations. In 2021, she founded WISA, a research institute at the University of Waterloo, which aims to become the world’s leading hub for sustainable aeronautical research, technology, and education, boasting a mission that involves over 140 faculty members. Dr. Kearns holds a Doctorate of Philosophy in Education with a specialization in Instructional Design for Online Learning from Capella University, a Master of Science in Human Factors Systems Engineering from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Science also from Embry-Riddle.
